Most people who care about Scripture still feel like they're guessing when they open it alone.
That's not a faith problem. It's a reading problem.
Reading the Bible well is a skill that can be learned.
The work here is simple: start with the world the text came from. Pay attention to what it was actually doing. Then ask what it means for us.
About Jan
I've spent over 25 years talking with people about the Bible, 11 of those years in a classroom. Those conversations kept showing me the same thing: people care deeply about Scripture but were never taught how to read it. Sincere, diligent, curious, and still lost every time they opened the Bible alone.
That's what led me to pursue further study. I earned a Bachelor's in Biblical Studies from Azusa Pacific and a Master's in Bible Exposition from Biola, and those years forced me to examine my own assumptions about how Scripture was written and first understood.
I started Deeper Ground for the people I've been teaching and talking with all along. Careful reading is a lifelong pursuit, not a finished achievement. The goal isn't to tell you what to think, but to help you learn how to read.
The Book
A Guide to Reading the Bible Faithfully in Its Own World
A slow, honest guide to reading Scripture on its own terms. It won't tell you what to believe. It'll help you understand how to read, and what gets in the way.
